The Philippine sugarcane milling season runs from October to September, following a crop year that starts and ends in the middle of the calendar year. When a mill opens in October, it begins accepting deliveries. When it closes at the end of September, that window is done until the next season. Your harvest has to happen inside that window.

That simple fact constrains everything else about harvest timing.

What CCS Actually Measures

CCS is Commercial Cane Sugar, the percentage of sucrose recoverable from your cane. It is calculated as the mass of sugar extractable per 100 kilograms of cane delivered to the mill. If your cane tests at 12 CCS and you deliver 100 metric tons, the mill credits you with 12 metric tons of sugar equivalent as the basis for your quedan payment.

Philippine mills pay on a quedan system. Your share of the sugar produced from your cane is returned to you as either physical sugar or its peso equivalent at the current market price. The SRA sets the sharing ratio, and the mill handles the calculation. What you control is the CCS number.

The difference between 10 CCS and 12 CCS on a 50-ton delivery is 1 metric ton of sugar. At current Philippine market prices, that is several thousand pesos on one delivery alone. Across a full farm with multiple fields cutting across the season, getting the timing right or wrong by two CCS points is the difference between a good crop year and one that only covers costs.

How Sugar Builds in the Stalk

Sugarcane stores sucrose primarily in the lower internodes of the stalk. As the crop matures, sucrose moves from the leaf canopy downward into storage tissue. The base internodes of a mature stalk carry higher sucrose concentration than the top internodes. This gradient is how the plant works. The mill tests a representative sample from the whole stalk, so the gradient matters to your CCS number.

A field approaching maturity shows this gradient clearly if you cut a stalk and taste it at different heights. The lower stalk is noticeably sweeter than the upper stalk. An immature field, or a field that received heavy rain recently, shows less contrast: the stalk is reasonably sweet throughout but not concentrated at the base.

The decline after peak is slower than the rise. But after peak, two things happen that cannot be reversed: sucrose begins inverting in the stalk, and ratoon buds at the stool base start drawing on stored stalk sucrose for their own development. Both processes cost you CCS.

Reading Maturity Without a Lab

You don't need a polarimetric test to estimate whether your field is approaching peak. Farmers who have grown the same variety on the same field for several cycles develop a reliable read on it. The physical indicators are consistent across most Philippine varieties, even when the timing shifts by a few weeks.

Stalk firmness. A mature stalk resists bending under moderate hand pressure and produces a sharp crack when it breaks rather than a fibrous tear. An immature stalk or one with high water content from recent rain has more flex and a tougher, more fibrous break.

Leaf colour at the canopy top. The top two to three leaves of a mature plant shift from bright green to a yellow-green. This is not the yellowing of nitrogen deficiency, which starts in the middle and lower canopy and moves upward. Maturity yellowing starts at the canopy tip and is uniform across the whole top of the row.

Node coloration on the lower stalk. In some varieties, mature internodes show a distinct reddish-brown or tan color change at the node ring. This is more visible in lighter-skinned varieties than in green or dark-striped ones.

Reduced tillering at the stool base. A field in grand growth produces new tillers continuously. As the crop nears maturity, tiller production slows. Walking a field and finding very little new growth at the stool base is a reliable signal that the crop is at or near its productive peak.

None of these indicators is as precise as a lab test, and SRA harvest scheduling guidelines treat field observations as proxies rather than measurements. But for scheduling purposes on a Negros smallholder farm, if a field shows three or more of these signs on the PSR 03-171 or similar varieties at 10 to 12 months, it is ready. The question then is when the mill will take your delivery.

Plant Crop and Ratoon Are on Different Clocks

A plant crop from August or September planting in Negros typically reaches 12 months in August or September of the following year. That lands inside the milling season window and is usually workable for scheduling.

A ratoon from the same field sprouts 4 to 6 weeks after harvest and runs on a shorter cycle. The first ratoon often matures at 10 to 11 months rather than 12 to 14. If your plant crop harvested in August, your first ratoon may be ready by June the following year, ahead of many other farms requesting mill slots at the same time.

Variety choice affects this. O.E. Humbert's reference on tropical sugarcane agronomy, which remains the standard for understanding sucrose physiology across varieties, describes early-maturing varieties as reaching peak CCS faster but holding that peak for a shorter window. Late-maturing varieties take longer to reach peak but maintain higher CCS across a wider harvest window. For a Negros farm that regularly waits on mill slots and cannot control its delivery date, a late-maturing variety is more forgiving of scheduling delays. The Mill Decides When You Cut

The most important thing to understand about harvest timing in the Philippines is that you often do not choose your harvest date. The mill does.

Philippine mill scheduling works on a queue system. The allocations officer assigns haul schedules based on the mill's crushing capacity, proximity of fields to mill roads, and relationships with planters built over multiple seasons. Your scheduled haul date may be several weeks before or after your field's actual optimum. That gap is where a lot of income gets lost.

The practical response: establish direct communication with your mill's allocations team early in the season. Give them a realistic estimate of when each field will be ready. Mills prefer to avoid cutting immature cane because it runs through processing equipment at lower efficiency and depresses their average CCS output. Planters who communicate field readiness clearly and early generally get better slot placement than those who wait for the mill to assign them.

What Weather Does to Your CCS

Dry weather in the two to four weeks before harvest accelerates sucrose accumulation in the stalk. A plant under mild water stress shifts more photosynthate into sucrose storage rather than vegetative growth. This is why late dry season harvests in Negros, typically March through May, often test higher CCS than harvests in the October to December wet-end period on comparable fields.

Heavy rain in the week before harvest dilutes sucrose in the lower stalk. A mature field that tests at 12 CCS in dry conditions may drop to 10 to 11 CCS after several days of rain. Beyond the CCS loss, fields that have just been rained on have softer soil, which means more compaction from truck movements during loading. The compaction affects your next ratoon.

SRA harvest scheduling guidelines note explicitly that when rain is forecast in the five-day window before a scheduled haul, it is worth requesting a delay if the mill can accommodate it. Most planters don't ask because they fear losing their slot. A two-point CCS drop across a full delivery is a significant income loss. Asking for a delay and getting it is almost always worth more than the slot security.

The Real Cost of Getting It Wrong

Cutting too early is the more common mistake. A field at 9 CCS that could reach 12 CCS in three more weeks looks ready from the road. The stalks are tall, the weight is there, the field looks like harvest. But the sucrose hasn't concentrated into the base internodes yet. You get paid on 9 CCS.

The ratoon from an early-cut field starts under better conditions in one respect: if the early harvest lands in the dry season, the ratoon stool gets more dry-season growing time before the wet season, which generally helps early ratoon establishment. That is a real but partial offset. You still lost 3 CCS points on the delivery.

Cutting too late after peak is a different problem. A field that peaked in November and finally gets its mill slot in February has had sucrose inverting for three months. The stalk is also drawing on stored sucrose to feed ratoon bud development at the stool base. You get lower CCS and you give the ratoon a weaker start because the stool spent stored reserves feeding those buds. Weed pressure in an overgrown uncut field adds another cost: by the time you harvest, the weed competition the ratoon has to emerge through is worse than it would have been in a timely cut.

The best harvest timing is not a formula. It is the intersection of field maturity, weather forecast, mill slot availability, and variety tolerance for waiting. Most experienced Negros farmers navigate this by reading their field well and staying in contact with the mill. The research is what explains why those two practices produce better income than either guessing or just taking whatever slot the mill assigns without negotiating.
