Most farmers in Negros plant VMC 84-538. Not because it yields the most. Because the cooperative recommends it, the mill knows it, and the planting material is easy to find. That is a reasonable way to make a decision, but it is not the same as making the best decision for a specific farm.

The varieties a farm plants are one of the few inputs that do not cost extra per season. Choosing a variety better matched to the field's soil drainage and ratoon goals can lift yield without lifting input costs. The four countries with the most developed sugarcane research programs (the Philippines, Thailand, Australia, and Brazil) have all reached the same finding: variety matching matters more than most farmers give it credit for.

What Philippine Research Has Released

PHILSURIN and SRA maintain the national variety program. PHILSURIN's public-facing varieties are four PSR releases suited to conditions in Visayas and Mindanao sugarcane zones.

PSR 07-195 performs best in lowland conditions where soil stays moist through the growing season. It is a high-yield variety; total cane tonnage is strong, but confirm sucrose content with your mill because performance figures vary by district.

PSR 03-171 is the ratoon variety in the group. PHILSURIN describes it as having excellent ratooning ability with high sugar content, and it performs best on well-drained soils. A farmer on low-lying land that floods seasonally will not get the same ratoon performance from PSR 03-171 that a farmer on elevated, well-drained land will.

PSR 07-66 is the most adaptable of the four, suited to both lowland and upland conditions. For a farmer farming across different terrain or uncertain about soil type, this is the safer starting point.

PSR 10-111 was released specifically for Visayas conditions and carries moderate resistance to common diseases. For Negros Oriental farmers, this is the most geographically relevant of the PHILSURIN releases.

SRA maintains 27 additional varieties in the PHIL series. Detailed agronomic data for those varieties is not accessible through the public-facing website, but the SRA-RDE (Research and Development) office can provide recommendations by region on request.

VMC 84-538 remains the dominant variety in Negros because of mill acceptance and the availability of certified planting material through cooperatives. It is a reliable choice. It is not always the highest-performing choice.

What Thailand's Program Shows

Thailand's sugarcane research comes out of OCSB (Office of the Cane and Sugar Board) and the Khon Kaen University breeding program. Their variety challenges differ from the Philippines. More of Thailand's cane land deals with alternating waterlogging and drought than Negros's relatively stable rainfall pattern. But the research is relevant because some of Negros Oriental's lowland farms face the same seasonal flooding problem.

KPS01-12 has become one of the most studied varieties in recent Thai research because it performs consistently across conditions that break other varieties. In waterlogging trials, it maintained the highest single stalk weight among all tested genotypes. Under drought and recovery conditions, it showed the highest water use efficiency, meaning it uses available moisture more effectively than competitors.

For a Negros farmer with land near a river drainage area that floods in July–August and dries out by February, a variety with KPS01-12-type tolerance is worth seeking. Philippine breeding programs do not yet publish a direct equivalent, but KPS01-12 demonstrates what to ask SRA about when requesting a variety recommendation for low-lying fields.

KK3 (Khon Kaen 3) is the high-yield clay soil variety in Thailand. In trials across two separate research locations with clay-dominant soils, KK3 produced the highest cane yields. Negros Oriental's lowland clay loam soils are not identical to central Thailand's clays, but the soil type overlap is relevant. In 2023, Thailand released KK4, a high-fiber, high-biomass variety specifically developed to increase bagasse output for bioenergy. KK4 produces around 1.5 times more bagasse than KK3 while maintaining sugar yield.

What Australia's Program Shows

Queensland's sugarcane industry is concentrated in the Wet Tropics corridor between Cairns and Townsville. Australian varieties are not published in a single national list. The recommendation system is regional, run through Sugar Research Australia and local extension facilitators.

As of 2023, four varieties accounted for 72% of Queensland's sugarcane production: Q208A (25.7%), Q240A (18.1%), SRA9A (15.4%), and Q253A (12.7%). These are not picked from a universal preference; they dominate because they were matched to specific regional soil types and mill requirements through years of replicated trials.

The Smartcane BMP (Best Management Practices) accreditation program makes soil health and variety selection a formal part of farm management, not a one-time planting decision. Accredited growers document their soil type, variety choice, and rationale. This creates a feedback loop: the industry learns what works where.

The Philippines has no equivalent program at industry scale. The lesson is not the specific variety names but the selection process: know your soil drainage class before choosing a variety, and revisit that choice when yield trends change.

What Brazil's Program Shows

Brazil produces more sugarcane than any other country. As of 2016, five varieties dominated plantings: RB867515 (26% of planted area), RB966928 (9.7%), SP81-3250 (8.1%), RB855453 (6.0%), and RB855156 (5.8%). Together these five varieties cover more than half of Brazil's sugarcane area.

RB867515 is the most important variety for Philippine farmers to understand, not because it can be planted here, but because of what it demonstrates. Under proper stub and soil management, RB867515 has been maintained in productive ratoon cultivation for 23 years. That is what is possible when variety selection is paired with soil pH maintenance, consistent nitrogen timing, and stub care.

The PSR and PHIL varieties in the Philippines do not have 23-year ratoon records. But the principle holds: a variety with strong ratooning genetics, planted in the right soil conditions, with basic post-harvest care, will outlast a poorly matched variety planted in the wrong drainage conditions by several ratoon cycles.

SP80-3280 is Brazil's high-sucrose benchmark variety and is used in most university research because its agronomic response to nitrogen and soil conditions is well-documented. For Philippine farmers, the relevant finding from SP80-3280 trials is that stalk productivity increased linearly with nitrogen application. Nitrogen rate is not a guess; it is a measurable input with a measurable return.

What All Four Countries Agree On

Four programs with different climates, soil types, and industry structures have arrived at the same core conclusions.

Drainage determines ratoon performance more than almost anything else. PSR 03-171 ratooning on well-drained soil and PSR 03-171 ratooning on waterlogged soil are different crops. KPS01-12 in Thailand was specifically selected because it does not collapse in wet conditions. RB867515 in Brazil is managed across 23 years partly because Brazilian Oxisols are deep and drain well.

Variety matching is not a permanent decision. Australian farms update variety selection when soil tests, mill data, or pest pressure changes. Thai research adds varieties to their recommendation list as new trial data accumulates. Philippine farmers who planted VMC 84-538 for 20 years are not committed to it forever.

High-yield varieties do not automatically win. PSR 07-195 has high yield, but on the wrong soil its performance drops. KK3 is a high-yield clay soil variety, but on sandy soils it does not outperform alternatives. The yield figure in a variety description is always a context-dependent number, not a guaranteed outcome.

Practical Steps for Negros Farmers

Before the next planting cycle, three questions are worth answering:

What is the drainage class of the field? Walk the field after the first significant rain of the wet season. Water that clears in under 24 hours is well-drained. Water that takes 48–72 hours to clear is a waterlogging risk. That single observation changes which variety to plant.

What is the target: highest yield per season, or lowest input cost over multiple ratoons? PSR 03-171's ratoon strength means a higher upfront investment in planting material may return more value over a four-to-five ratoon cycle than a variety with better first-crop yield but shorter ratoon life.

What does the mill pay a premium for? Some mills pay bonuses on sucrose content, not just tonnage. A variety like PSR 03-171 with high sugar content is more valuable per tonne at mills that price on sucrose. VMC 84-538 is known and accepted everywhere, and is the right choice when reliability matters more than premium pricing.

The variety is planted once. What grows from it runs for years.
