Author's note: This protocol is based on practical field experience in sugarcane plantation management. RSSI is an emerging local threat and long-term data is still developing. Agronomists and field managers should evaluate local economics and verify FPA product registrations and label rates before field use.

Design Principles

Five rules this protocol is built on.

Month 3 to 4 and Month 5+ applications are triggered by scouting thresholds, not the calendar.

Before Any Treatment: Scouting and Action Thresholds

Walk a W or Z pattern across the field. Stop at 5 to 10 random spots and inspect lower leaf undersides and stalk bases of at least 20 stools per hectare. In closed canopy (months 3 to 6), enter along interrows only: penetrate 20 to 30 m, inspect 5 to 10 stools, backtrack, repeat at 4 to 5 entry points around the perimeter.

Pre-planting: Seed Cane Sanitation

Source clean patdan. Use seed cane from fields with no RSSI history in the prior season wherever possible.

Visually inspect before cutting. Discard any sett showing visible scale colonies, heavy honeydew residue, or sooty mold.

Strip leaf sheaths first (pag-panit) before dipping. Crawlers hiding beneath tight sheaths will survive a dip if the sheath is left on.

If sourcing from an infested field: submerge setts for 1 to 2 minutes (not longer, bud suffocation risk) in either horticultural mineral oil at 100 to 200 ml per 20 L water, or a neem oil emulsion (pre-mix 0.5 to 1.0 L neem oil + 200 to 300 ml liquid soap per 100 L water). Add organosilicone surfactant (SENTRONG / KINETIC / BREAK-THRU) at 5 to 10 ml per 20 L for cuticle penetration. Drain immediately over the vat before laying in the furrow.

Bud Safety

Oil concentration above 1.0% combined with long soak times (3 to 5 minutes) risks suffocating bud primordia. Keep concentrations low, dips brief, drain fast.

P1 DAY 0

At Planting or Stubble Shaving

Systemic root drench establishes a chemical barrier in the rhizosphere. Emerging roots absorb the active ingredient and translocate it into expanding foliage, providing 60 to 90 days of early-growth protection against RSSI crawlers, white grubs (buk-an), termites (anay), and shoot borer (tamasok).

Application Method

  • Plant crop: In-furrow drench over laid seed pieces before soil coverage.
  • Ratoon: Narrow-band spray (20 to 30 cm wide) directly over cut stubble line after off-barring and stubble shaving.
  • Minimum water volume: 400 L/ha. Two operators in tandem down the same furrow to achieve this without slowing to an exhausting pace.
  • Nozzle height: 15 to 20 cm above setts. This compresses the swath to a 20 to 30 cm band, concentrating drench on the target zone.

Why You Cannot Fully Rotate Away from Group 4 at Day 0

Group 4 (nAChR modulators) is the only commercial family with both true root-xylem systemic mobility and sett safety. A complete mode-of-action break at this stage is chemically unfeasible without losing early protection. Broader diversity is introduced in Phases 2 and 4.

P2 MONTHS 3 TO 4

Closed Canopy Protection

Trigger

Only spray when scouting shows more than 20% infestation rate. Do not spray on a calendar schedule.

The most important number in this phase: 400 L/ha.

Standard Philippine practice is around 200 L/ha. That volume only wets outer leaf surfaces. RSSI hides inside leaf sheaths, behind leaf axils, and along lower stalk nodes. You need at least 400 L/ha to drench past the canopy into those hiding places. Increase water volume only, not the chemical dose per hectare.

Why Spirotetramat is Preferred in Years 1 and 3

It is fully ambimobile: it moves both upward (xylem) and downward (phloem). This means it actively translocates into lower leaf sheaths where colonies hide, even without drop-booms. Flonicamid and Afidopyropen move mainly upward, so directed nozzle placement toward lower canopy is critical in Year 2.

P3 MONTH 5

Detrashing and Interrow Mulching

Strip aging yellow and brown leaf sheaths to expose lower nodes and remove egg mass harborage. The stripped material left in interrows creates a mulch layer that traps humidity, which is exactly the condition Metarhizium and Beauveria need to germinate naturally.

Tandem Stripping Method: Two Workers Per Row

Worker 1: Lead (Active Pouch)

Moves ahead scanning for white cottony ovisacs (egg masses). Strips only heavily infested leaves and deposits them into a front-slung apron pouch. Takes them off-field for destruction.

Does NOT drop them on the ground.

Worker 2: Trailing (Canopy Maintenance)

Follows approximately 6 meters behind. Strips remaining yellow and dry brown leaves. Drops all stripped material directly in the interrow as mulch.

Hard Rule: Never Go Below 8 to 10 Green Leaves

If stripping a leaf would reduce active green leaves below 8 to 10 on the stalk, do not strip it. Mark the block for post-detrashing spray treatment instead. Stripping too many leaves causes metabolic shock and halts sugar accumulation.

Targeted Post-Detrash Maintenance

Critical Timing Window

Ground applications must begin within 48 to 72 hours after detrashing is complete. This intercepts mobile crawlers from fallen ovisacs before they re-ascend the stalks. Always spray after 4:00 PM. Overnight humidity above 85% is required for biological agents to germinate.

Spray Method: Knapsack Teams

  • Wand: 1.0 to 1.2 m lance with 45-degree angled tip extension. Hollow-cone or off-center flat fan nozzle at 1.5 to 2.0 bar.
  • Left arm: Continuous pumping, 1 stroke every 2 to 3 walking steps.
  • Right arm: Wand extended behind the hip, spraying your wake, not swinging side to side.
  • One row face per pass. Walk forward spraying the right face. Return along the next interrow spraying the opposite face. Full 360-degree coverage.
  • Walking speed: 1.0 to 1.2 m/s. Minimum 400 L/ha water volume.

Drone Trigger

Switch to aerial drone when stalk height exceeds 1.5 m, stalks begin to lodge, or canopy closure prevents ground entry safely. Flight at 2.0 to 2.5 m above canopy, 12 to 15 km/h, 20 to 30 L/ha water volume. Use organosilicone super-spreader (SILWET L-77) instead of HMO for drones. HMO clogs ULV nozzles.

Float Test: Biological Quality Check

Sprinkle a quarter teaspoon of spore powder into a glass of clean water. Spores float as a dry powdery film on the surface. Spores sink immediately or water turns murky. Heat or poor storage has destroyed viability.

PHI (pre-harvest interval) must be confirmed against current FPA-approved Philippine labels before each application. These REIs are minimums only.

Technical Rationale: Why Carbofuran (Furadan) Is Excluded

Worker exposure: WHO Class Ib (Highly Hazardous). Philippine planting uses manual labor. Workers handling setts and closing furrows by hand face extreme acute toxicity risk via skin contact or dust inhalation.

Soil sterilization: Kills native microflora, predatory soil mites, and entomopathogenic fungi (Metarhizium / Beauveria). Without these, the interrow trash mulch cannot sustain the biological spore reservoir that controls RSSI crawlers naturally.

Groundwater hazard: High water solubility (700 mg/L) and GUS index above 3.0, which is the highest leaching risk level. Unacceptable in volcanic and alluvial sugarcane soils.

Mill audit failure: High residue stability creates unacceptable risk of detection at millable age.

Resurgence risk: Kills natural predators (Anagyrus parasitoids, ladybird beetles) while failing to penetrate RSSI's waxy ovisacs, which triggers secondary scale resurgence.
